Recipe: Brocco-flower Pear Puree

broccoflower-pear-puree-01This has been one of my go-to puree recipes for some time now. Whenever I tell people my son’s favorite food, they wrinkle their noses. How ever did I come up with that combination, they ask me. Well, Little Dude loves pears. They were his second food, and despite his initial reaction (BEST. FACE. EVER.), he will eat them any way he can get them. So they make an easy addition to any puree recipe I’m tinkering with.

Pears and cauliflower seem like easy bedfellows to me. They both have mild flavors and easy, creamy textures when pureed. There’s just something about all that… WHITE food though. It needs some nice dark greens to juice up it’s nutritional value and add a little complexity. (Yes, I think about the complexity of food flavors when feeding my kid… I’m not raising any picky eaters of bland food over here.) Broccoli is a nutritional powerhouse, but pungent so watch how much broccoli you’re adding in here. Note that my ratio of pears and cauliflower to broccoli is about 4-to-1.

Not that it matters much, but I think this puree is just gorgeous. It packages so beautifully I want to give it away as gifts. But I don’t. Because my kid loves it. So there.

This is also a great recipe for moving toward textures. Try leaving the skin on the pears (after you scrub them clean of course!), blending for less time, or even mashing it instead of processing.

Brocco-flower Pear Puree

1 head of organic cauliflower, or 1 pkg frozen organic cauliflower
2 ripe organic pears, cored and diced (peeled or not, depending on your baby’s preference and age)
1 stalk or head of organic broccoli, or 1 cup of frozen organic broccoli

Steam pears, cauliflower and broccoli together in a steam basket on the stovetop for 5-7 minutes, or until tender. Reserve water. Combine pears, cauliflower and broccoli with 1 tbsp of reserved water in food processor and process until desired consistency is achieved. Add more of the reserved water to thin the puree as desired.
