Recipe: Copycat Banana Rice & Quinoa Mish Mash

copycat-banana-mish-mash-01I do give my son commercial baby food on occasion, probably about 4-5 pouches a week. Sometimes it’s to try a new flavor, but usually it’s because I can keep it in my diaper bag for days on end without worrying about refrigeration. (We’re at the point that if I get stuck out longer than I plan, Little Dude needs more than breast milk to fill full.) I love Plum Organics baby food when I need to buy commercial. There aren’t a lot of additives (unlike other organic baby foods), and I think the flavor combinations are really creative.

So I was a little perplexed when my son rejected this particular flavor. I checked the ingredients. Banana puree, milled quinoa, brown rice… Citric acid. A-ha. Citric acid is little more than lemon juice, but if your kid isn’t used to commercial baby food, then it’s a tang that ruins the whole taste.

This whole thing took me less than 10 minutes from concept to baby’s mouth. I boiled some five-minute brown rice (yes, it’s better to use regular brown rice but sometimes convenience trumps), mashed a banana, made a little quinoa flake cereal with hot water, and mashed it all together with a potato masher.

And wouldn’t you know? That baby ate the ENTIRE thing. A whole banana. I’m guessing it made about 5-6 ounces total.

Banana Rice & Quinoa Mish Mash

Ingredients

1 ripe organic banana, mashed
1 tsp quinoa flakes, mixed with hot water to a thin cereal consistency (or pureed cooked quinoa)
1 tbsp prepared brown rice

Method

Mash the banana with a potato masher or the back of a fork. Add prepared quinoa flakes and brown rice; mash until desired consistency.
